Detailed Structure of ILM Awards

The ILM Awards in Management can be made at different levels.

For each of these levels it is possible to achieve different qualifications dependent upon the breadth of topics covered and the amount of time spent studying. Thus it is possible to achieve a Level 2 Award which requires candidates to achieve 3 credits, over 22 tutor led hours, or a Level 2 Certificate which requires candidates to achieve 13 credits over 65 tutor led hours. Candidates who start with an Award can put the credits they gain towards a Certificate if they wish to progress their studies. It is for this reason that we are offering the Level 2 Award initially, but if organisations wish to place staff straight onto the Certificate programme, then we would be pleased to discuss this option with them.

The following are the formal requirements set by the ILM for the Level 2 Award and Certificate

Work based assignment for Mandatory Unit

A mandatory element of the ILM Level 3 Award in First Line Management is to complete a work-based Assignment of no less than 1000 words. All participants will receive close tutorial support and guidance through to completion by their tutor.

The Work based assignment will involve participants identifying a workplace problem with the team or department or even personally and examining ways to resolve it. For the purposes of the assignment ‘problem’ may be interpreted as ‘a deviation from the norm’ OR ‘an improvement opportunity’ OR ‘a potential or anticipated problem’.

The choice should be discussed with the tutor in advance and possibly a line manager. The choice of topic must allow demonstrative achievement of learning outcomes from the mandatory unit: Solving Problems and Making Decisions. It should not be a large or complex topic, but it must offer scope for improvement – perhaps in productivity, profitability, customer service or working relationships, or perhaps in reducing waste, costs or labour turnover.

Time will need to be spent gathering information and perhaps discussing ideas with managers and tutor before writing it up. Full guidance and tutorial support will be provided.

A sample of the work based assignment structure is set out below:
